5 tips to fight against oily skin

We all dream about clean skin, without imperfections. Sometimes, skin becomes oily, which causes some undesirable shine on the face. But above all, it promotes the appearance of blackheads and acne. So how can we fight naturally against this kind of problems? Well, it is a matter of skin flora balance.

Why your skin is oily ?

The skin represents 16% of our total weight. It is the largest organ of the human body. Its role is to protect the organism from the external environment by acting as a filter against aggressions. To function normally, the skin must be in good health. It must receive all the necessary intakes (nutrients, water) to maintain a good balance.

 

Hormonal changes, pollution, stress or unhealthy diet can disrupt the natural balance of the skin. Therefore, the skin becomes oily, causing the shine of the skin and imperfections. By deduction, we often think that it is necessary to use drying and stripping products to eliminate the sebum excess whereas in reality an oily skin is very often a dry skin lacking of water.

In the long term, you will get the opposite effect, in addition to having weakened your skin.

Oily skin is due to an excessive sebum (seborrhea) production, which gives the skin a glistening appearance. We talk about «mixed» skin when the shine is located on the T zone (forehead, nose, chin), and the rest of the facial skin is rather dry. If the excess sebum concerns the entire face, we talk more generally about «oily» skin. The difference is subtle but important to adapt for the best its beauty routine and regain balance and comfort.

 

What is sebum ?

It is an oily substance naturally secreted by the sebaceous glands of the skin. The sebaceous glands are small tanks connected to the hair follicle, where the hair grows.

But don’t worry, its production is normal! The skin needs sebum to maintain its hydration, softness and elasticity. A skin which lacks sebum is drier, more fragile and uncomfortable.

Moreover, sebum is one of the components of the hydrolipidic film that covers the whole surface of the skin to protect it from the intrusion of impurities and bacteria. If the skin is too oily, the pores become clogged and black spots appear. But conversely, a skin which lacks sebum will be less well protected and will be subject to imperfections. Actually, it is all about BALANCE.

It is often thought that to treat problematic skin, it is necessary to dry it out, to clean one’s face more frequently with more aggressive products. In the very short term, we can have the impression of getting results. But in the long term, the imbalance is going to increase and skin problems are going to multiply. Why ? Because sebum is not an enemy, on the contrary. If the skin is weakened, the sebaceous glands play a defensive role by producing even more sebum to fight against aggressions.

But a shiny skin is not the only disadvantage of an oily skin. Excess sebum can cause blackheads and spots.

 

Oily skin and acne

If acne generally disappears after puberty, severe acne - which is difficult to treat - can persist in adulthood and especially leave scars or cracks on the skin. It is not unusual to have acne after the age of 30 but it can become a real complex for the people concerned. 

Among women, the main reason is often hormonal. Varying steps of acne may occur at certain periods of life, at the time of pregnancy, after childbirth or because of a change in contraception. 

But there are nevertheless some natural and simple tips to have a clean skin and a unified complexion, without imperfections.

1) Adapt your daily beauty routine

When you have oily and acne-prone skin, it is better to opt for natural and softer products with a neutral pH. It is essential to preserve the balance of the skin flora and this is the case for every type of skin. Beware of the composition of the products is the first step to avoid stressing the skin and risking it starts to produce too much sebum. 

Makeup removal

The first necessary step is the makeup removal. It is imperative before bedtime to eliminate all accumulated impurities throughout the day and especially when you have a problematic skin. Today, there are many different textures to remove makeup but contrary to popular belief, natural vegetable oils are quite adapted to oily skin. Their advantages are as follows :

They eliminate the most tenacious makeup including waterproof

No need to rub, so it doesn’t irritate the skin

They nourish the skin

They contain minerals, antioxidants and other elements with multiple benefits

However, for oily skin with imperfections, it is necessary to choose a non-comedogenic oil, such as Jojoba, Argan or Avocado oil.

Face clean-up

After removing the make-up, clean your face. Using a soft and natural cleansing gel with neutral pH will allow to softly remove the last impurities without changing the skin pH. The soaps have a basic pH, between 9 and 12. The natural pH of the skin is about 5.5 so using a soap increases the risk of unbalancing the skin flora.

Be careful! A soap, strictly speaking, is a solid or liquid product obtained by a process called “saponification”. It is made from vegetable oils and soda (for solid soaps) or potash (for liquid soaps) from which comes the basic pH. They are distinct from solid bars which may have a neutral pH and are also quite adapted for cleansing the face of all skin types, including oily.

Moisturizing

If you have a combination to oily skin, it is better to opt for an oily-free texture. The textures of face mist or serum are ideal. They allow the skin to breathe while providing a feeling of freshness and comfort. Little tip : the mist may be used in the evening as well as in the morning but also throughout the day, even if you are wearing makeup. The fine droplets will deposit on the skin and then penetrate without ruining your makeup. 

Even if sebum plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration, an oily skin is not necessarily well hydrated. So this step should not be neglected but simply adapted to find comfort.

For the morning, you can use a not too rich natural day cream to avoid shine.

The makeup

Wanting to hide your imperfections is normal but you have to do it with the right products. The first thing to remember is to avoid obstruct the pores of the skin at all costs. Therefore, prefer for example a light powder to an opaque foundation. If a spot is very red, there are natural correctors that let the skin breathe and don’t hinder the healing.

If you spend the day at home, it is better not to wear makeup to let the skin breathe as much as possible. And even if you go out, don’t forget: you look naturally beautiful!

There are two exfoliation types :

The mechanical scrub with grains. You apply it on the skin and then you massage by small circular movements. If you opt for this kind of exfoliating scrub, always choose natural grains such as an apricot kernel powder but above all fine grains not to irritate the skin.

Therefore, it would seem necessary to control foods with a high glycemic index in case of skin problems. Sugars are responsible for insulin secretion, which itself activates androgen production (male hormones) and these ones are responsible for sebum production in sebaceous glands of the skin.

Often pointed at when it comes to acne, cow’s milk contains omega 6. Their combined action with testosterone and insulin would have adverse effects on the skin. Even if the link is not fully demonstrated, it is nevertheless recommended to limit the consumption of dairy products in case of skin problems.

In traditional Chinese medicine, attention is focused on the direct effects between diet and the effects on skin and hair. That is what western countries are less sensitive. Some populations who have preserved a more traditional diet know perfectly the benefits of each food on the skin.
